The number of amazing matches that have been cancelled is so high that we actually have a top 5 list on this! Without further ado, here are 5 big matches that were cancelled in 2019:

#5 – The OC vs The New Day

Let’s start with the most recent one. The New Day were set to take on The OC on SmackDown Live on 30th of July, and it was announced just a few hours before the show.

WWE Universe was all excited for it, but it all came crumbling down within hours. With the fans settling into the arena ahead of the show, WWE announced that they match card was changed.

Instead of The OC taking of The New Day, it was changed to a singles ‘Champion vs Champion’ in a non-title match. WWE champion, Kofi Kingston was pitted against United States champion, AJ Styles with their fraction partners at ringside. While Kofi vs Styles is also a big match, the tag-team match would have been something else.

If rumours are to be believed, Vince McMahon was behind this sudden change. The chairman reportedly asked for the whole show to be rewritten hours before it began and that clearly means it was done after the tag team match was announced.

Why he did it or what made him do it will remain a mystery, and the WWE Universe would have to wait a little longer to see this dream tag-team match happen. The show was nothing compared to Monday Night Raw, and as it was written in a hurry, nothing much can be said about it too.

#4 – Shawn Michaels vs AJ Styles

Shawn Michaels vs AJ Styles at WrestleMania 35. That was the plan for a long time and there were rumours that HBK’s return to the ring at Crown Jewel last season to take on the Brothers of Destruction was just the start of it.

This was initially teased for Royal Rumble 2018 but then moved to WrestleMania 35 as it needed to be on the grandest stage of them all. However, things did not go as planned and the match was cancelled without any news on it.

Shawn Michaels also commented on it and said: “There was talk about it possibly happening at WrestleMania. I think he’s an unbelievably talented young man. I wish I was 10 to 15 years younger because there are so many great guys. But it’s very important to me, I wouldn’t have retired unless I was ready to walk away.” [H/T Cageside Seats]

#3 – Natalya vs Ronda Rousey

WrestleMania 35 was a historic one for women’s wrestling. Ronda Rousey, Becky Lynch, and Charlotte Flair main evented on the grandest stage of them all and the match lived up to the hype as well. The botched finish did take little away from it, but overall, it was well-received by the WWE Universe.

However, that might not have been the initial plan for WWE. The creative team wanted a Natalya vs Ronda Rousey match at WrestleMania with the former UFC champion going in as the babyface.

The plan was set in motion but just before Natalya could turn heel, her father, Jim Neidhart passed away and the storyline was cancelled straight away. The unfortunate turn of events saw Natalya out of the title picture for some time but now at SummerSlam 2019, she has a chance of winning the RAW Women’s title in her home country, Toronto!

#2 – Lars Sullivan vs John Cena

John Cena was someone who was rumored to never put talent over. That was one thing the WWE Universe never liked about him but things have certainly changed.

The 16-time WWE champion has constantly been putting over talents now and has been involved in a couple of squash matches as well. The plan for Cena at WrestleMania 35 initially was to put Lars Sullivan over but the NXT star suffered anxiety attack before his main roster debut and never made it to WWE TV until RAW after WrestleMania.

Cena still made an appearance at WrestleMania 35 and brought fans the fans’ favourite Doctor of Thuganomics, gimmick. His segment with Elias was one of the best o the pay-per-view and there were no complaints about it whatsoever.

Now with Lars out for a few months, it won’t be a surprise if WWE return to this storyline of Cena vs Sullivan at next year’s WrestleMania.

#1 – Nia Jax vs Dean Ambrose (Jon Moxley)

When Nia Jax made her way to the ring in place of R-Truth in the Men’s Royal Rumble, it was clear that WWE was ready to experiment with intergender matches. Dean Ambrose was on his way out of the company and that was seen as an opportunity by WWE.

The match was not just a ‘plan for the future’, but it was announced as well. However, in the end, it was cancelled, and nobody knew why.

Nia Jax shed light on the cancellation of the match and said: “Unfortunately, my schedule was messed… they didn’t have the schedule right. And I have Total Divas work that I had to go to. So, it was more of like, the scheduling was off and we couldn’t make it work.”

WWE seem to have scrapped the idea for an intergender match now as there have been no hints in that direction for some time.
