Cricket has had an interesting tryst with music with quite a few legends of the game trying their hand at music too. Some have been successful, and some much less so.

Here, we look at 5 cricketers with musical talents as well:

  1. Brett Lee

It is no secret that Brett Lee is a superstar in the world of music. Alongside his brother, he was part of the band ‘Six&Out’ which was very popular. Brett’s former band Six&Out were comprised of Brett, his brother and former cricketer Shane and his New South Wales cricketing team mates Richard Chee Quee, Brad McNamara and Gavin Robertson.

In the band, Brett played the bass guitar as well as contributeed vocals. Brett is also an accomplished pianist.

After that, Brett joined long time friend singer/songwriter Mick Vawdon and they have formed their own band called ‘White Shoe Theory’. White Shoe Theory developed a popular mainstream rock sound with a growing collection of guitar driven songs, highlighted by strong vocal melody and harmonies.

Indian fans will recall Brett Lee joining Asha Bhosle, a musical legend for the song ‘You’re the One For Me’. It was a song written by Australian cricketer Brett Lee during the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy in India.

The lyrics were reportedly written in 30 minutes by Lee between practice sessions at the Champions Trophy.

  1. Ab de Villiers

By his own right, AB de Villiers is quite a successful musician, having released a pop album ‘Maak Jou Drome Waar’ with singer-songwriter South African Ampie du Preez in 2010, called Maak Jou Drome Waar. The album consists mainly of power ballads with a “follow-your-dreams” theme; and love songs. There are 14 songs – 9 in Afrikaans and 5 in English.

Ampie du Preez wass as full of praise for his partner during the launch of the album, saying, “AB is as fearless with his music as he is on the cricket pitch”.

  1. Graeme Swann

Graeme Swann was one of the most flamboyant and loved cricketers to have ever represented England. Always relied upon to keep a cheery mood in the dressing room, he was known to imitate people. He has been a part of the band called Dr Comfort and the Lurid Revelations. Tom Chaplin of the band Keane once famously Swann on the stage as they sang the song ‘Heroes’ by David Bowie.

  1. Shane Watson

During the ongoing IPL season, Shane Watson, the most expensive player in this year’s auction joined joined Danielle de Villiers – wife of South African superstar AB de Villiers in a duet. The recently retired Australian, a teammate of AB de Villiers at Royal Challengers Bangalore strummed his guitar and lent his voice as he and Danielle rang out a stirring rendition of Lady Gaga’s ‘Titanium’ and other famous songs proving his talent.
