When selecting a list of games to play before Life is Strange: True Colors, not every game needs to have the exact same feel as that game. Sometimes, playing a game that doesn’t have the same look or feel at all can help a user get geared up to dive into another game’s universe. Of course, there are a few games on this list that are specifically here in order to set the stage for the upcoming game.

Life is Strange

It should come as no surprise that the game that started it all, is on this list. However, Life is Strange also really does set the stage. Like other protagonists in the series, Alex Chen has some rather interesting powers. Playing the first game, that set up just how strange a young girl suddenly realizing she has superpowers can be, can really allow players to understand the main character more. There’s also the fact that Life is Strange still holds up as one of the best narrative adventure games in the genre.

The Walking Dead

Thematically, The Walking Dead is pretty far from Life is Strange: True Colors. However, the two series do have a few things in common. Chief among those similarities are several strong female leads. The original The Walking Dead game seemingly centered on Lee, but the real fan favorite both in this game and future installments is Clementine. The series followed her as she grew and matured, but it all started here in the first series. This is still one of the better episodic games to be released in the last decade.

Tales from the Borderlands

Now, for something completely different. No, Tales from the Borderlands and Life is Strange: True Colors don’t have much in common. Consider this a kind-of change of pace game from the Life is Strange universe. It’s one of the best episodic games out there in part because it might actually out-Borderlands the Borderlands series itself.

This Telltale Games version of the iconic looter shooter has the humor that the Borderlands series tries, but often fails to hit. Part of that is because this title is more inherently story-based. There was a time not all that long ago where this was a game people couldn’t play unless it was already downloaded, but Tales From The Borderlands recently re-launched on consoles and PC following a year away due to Telltale Games’ initial closure.

Kentucky Route Zero

Few episodic games took as long to release the last episode as Kentucky Route Zero did. The entire game is finally out now, and while it doesn’t look anything like Life is Strange: True Colors, there are some similarities in the story because of the colorful characters players will meet along the way. Even if the similarities between the two games are tenuous at best, this is a game that is among the best when it comes to narrative adventure games.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm

There’s a very simple reason why it will pay off to play Life is Strange: Before the Storm before True Colors. The two games share a character: Steph Gingrich first appeared in the Life is Strange prequel Before the Storm. In the upcoming game, she’s not only a supporting character, but a romance option for Alex Chen and a playable character for at least part of the story. It certainly makes sense to play Before the Storm to get a feel for Steph’s character and her personality.

Life is Strange: True Colors releases on September 10, 2021, for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
